Natural Resources

The Natural Resources Department is responsible for protecting the lands and resources of Wet’suwet’en territory for the benefit of the Wet’suwet’en, developing capacity for the economic development of our communities and preserving our resources for generations to come. The department also works to establish a base of information related to Wet’suwet’en territory and provide updates to, and seek direction, from the Hereditary Chiefs. We also liaise with appropriate government ministries and organizations as needed.

The initial Accord of 1994 established a Lands and Resources department for our Office. Since 2001, the Lands and Resources department focused its time and energy toward the development and completion of the Wet’suwet’en Territorial Stewardship Plan . In 2007, the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs unanimously decided to oppose the granting of a tenure for coalbed methane development in their traditional territory.
